The specimens observed by Rathbun (1924; 1936) are most likely Calappa galloides Stimpson, 1859. There is the expectation that most of the C. gallus identified specimens belong to two species: C. galloides s.str. and an unnamed species. To which of the two the specimens of Rathbun belong, is unknown. (Fransen, pers. com.)
