WoRMS follows the hypothesis that this is one species, under the name Mithrax aculeatus (Herbst, 1790), however there are several others who believe that records of Mithrax aculeatus (Herbst, 1790) belong to two other species namely: Mithrax pilosus Rathbun, 1892 and Mithrax verrucosus H. Milne Edwards, 1832. Both of the other two possible species occur in the same area, around Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao and St. Maarten.
