Squalus mitsukurii comprises a species complex. The type locality of S. mitsukurii lies in Japan. Pfleger et al. (2018) describe Squalus clarkae as species new to science with type locality Gulf of Mexico. It is unlikely that S. mitsukurii occurs in the Atlantic, where a number of other Squalus-species occur. It is well possible that the species of Squalus occurring in the Dutch Caribbean is in fact S. clarkae, or perhaps an other related species.
